JANA HUNTER, SILVER JEWS, THE QUEERS ALL ON
Sep 17th

UPDATE: QUEERS AND JEWS ARE ON THURSDAY, NOT TONIGHT. ADR IS A STUPID. WE HATE HIM.
BREAKING NEWS LIKE TREE LIMBS: Three whips as buggies shows whose statuses were in doubt like Thomas are, in fact, going to bring sweet relief to countless ears no doubt over saturated with the latest KTRH 740 News Radio Update. Tomorrow The Silver Jews, originally set to play in the citrusy surroundings of the Orange Show has been moved to Walters on Washington (Orange Show tickets will be honored). There at the Bar that Roy Mata Built, and hopefully with the great-eyed photog Miss Emily Driskill by his side, the doors open at SIX and the whole thing will be over by NINE. Silver Jews will take the stage SOMEWHERE IN THERE. Yes SIX to NINE as in this is an early show so get there, well, early. Why so early (SIX TO NINE!)? Well, its queer you should ask.
CAUSE ROUND TWO AT WALTERS THAT EVENING IS THE QUEERS! Still on, still going like white go-go boots. We’re not sure how they’ll shuffle one crowd out and the other in, or if there is any opportunity to buy a combo-meal pass of tickets of rock (two different promoters are doing the shows), we guess all that fun will have to be found out at the door (oh how awesome would it be if Jeoaf Monocles was working the door. Oh man, it’s like the best thirst and boredom-fighting action team of all time. Oh man. We’re going to make the three of them matching outfits. Oh man).
BUT OH – THERE IS A SHOW TONIGHT TOO GREAT CONFLICT OF THE HEART AND MIND! Jana Hunter, along with fellow Baltimorian Lesser Gonzales Alvarez have moved their show from the powerless DiverseWorks to the intimate surroundings of the Wakefield strip-anchoring joint known as the Petrol Station. Show kicks off also at seven, and is free (but bring a few bucks to throw Jana and Lesser’s way; gas is espensivez). The Petrol Station is currently operating on a cash-only basis, and does not have liquor. BUT – this is your big chance to check out the future of your nightlife, as you’ll be only blocks from the other ACE MAKING WAY STATIONS OF YOUR BOOZETURE! Yes, Wakefield Drive is also home to other great hole in the walls such as the Corner Ice House, Red’s Country Place (the Parrot Bar) and, of course, the epic DUTCHMAN. Want to check these places out? Head East after the show, keep your eyes peeled, townie bars like to hide. Party.
PS - Don’t forget to keep checking out our constantly updated CABIN FEVER FIGHTING SUPERTHREAD to get all the latest on places and things. Double Party.
TSN ON THE RADIO! TONIGHT! 8PM!
Aug 12th
It should go without saying that every Tuesday 8-10pm you should have your hi-fi dialed and locked into 91.7fm for The Local Show on KTRU (or you can stream it online here). This week is no exception, as we are pleased as Guyana Punch to be able to announce that The Skyline Network’s own adr will be guest hosting for the first hour. While he’s wearing cans on his ears and sitting behind the gold plated KTRU microphone, no doubt committing a number of gaffes proportionate to his unfamiliarity with the equipment, Ian, the mastermind and weekly host behind it all will be prepping the studio for a live performance by none other than The McKenzies. Strange brew indeed.
Though KTRU bylaws strictly prohibit any of his personality from shining through, he’s packing up his crate of records now and we can say definitively that you are in for a treat, including OH SO HOT sneak peek tracks from The Wild Moccasins, The Monocles, Tod the Fox and more! Plus, new stuff from all the aces records to come out in the past few months and weeks (including quite possibly the out-today new Jenny Westbury record – sure to cause sizzling no-he-did-unt gossip as adr seems incapable of uttering the words “Jenny Westbury” without following them with “will you marry me.” Now THAT is some news on the march! Sadly, you won’t get to hear any POWERHOUSE!, a band in adr’s current (and pepetual) top 5 local acts due to their affinity for bad words and the FCC’s distaste for the same. UNFUN!
UPDATE: Turns out one of our fav POWERHOUSE! songs doesn’t have any bad words so adr ended his set with it. Brilliant.
SSSF LIVE: PRODUCING WORDS WITH STEVEN FIERCE
Aug 2nd
The Gold Sounds are on TEXAS HEAT PRESENTS REFRESHING SHADE OF A MIGHTY OAK STAGE, but meanwhile we just had a few words with the hot man of shredding Steven Fierce (Something Fierce) about this and that. Though their free MP3 Modern Girl EP hit the streets only a few months ago, the trio has another full length already in the can and have turned from the relative ease of writing and recording epic up-beat garage jams to the serious pain in the butt that is actually putting a record out. After things went sour milk with the label that was to put out Modern Girl, the band is determined never to sit on a recording for so long again. At this point in the interview, we stopped taking notes and have no idea what happened next.
Steven also delved briefly into the idea of maybe getting into the producing business (for people who have not been in such widely recorded bands as Kiss Kiss Kill Kill, the producer is the person who comes in the studio and helps you more fully realize a vision of what your sound should be. Think Bruce Dickenson). When asked who he would like to work with in the land of microphones and isolation booths, he doesn’t hesitate to say The Monocles, Teenage Kicks and Satin Hooks. Man’s got good taste.
The Gold Sounds are fuzzing their way through a set that owes to the bayou and the bordello with a bit of the best of late 60′s SoCal thrown in. Party. Oh JUGGALO, the Tontons are here, guesss their slot is this afternoon. They’ve also got a slot at Avante Garden tonight at some sort of Jacob Calle naked lady picture event. Two show in a day! Them kids got heart.
