ATTN THIS WEEKEND: GET WORD TO THE DJ, TELL EM OAK FORREST IS IN THE HOUSE; PUT THE RECORD ON REPLAY
Jan 23rd

please enjoy this rant.
HEY we just had a revelation. Seriously. We can remember all the time when we were younger how we would see flyers for an afterparty for nearly every big show that came through town. We’re not just talking about the DJ and dance stuff (especially considering there are many well done after-parties in that scene going on all ready) but in rock and roll in general. Why was that? Or rather, why doesn’t that happen here (you guessed it, it wasn’t in this city). Well, for one, we would bet it’s the whole geographic proximity thing. Although, in a sense, that’s kinda bunk because you can catch a ride from Verizon or House of Blues down to someplace like the Mink or Notsuoh or Art Storm with a minimum of effort. What was the name of that club that got siezed by the Feds because it was a front for an X ring? The one with $1 cape cods on Wednesdays? We feel like we maybe went to some parties there. Maybe it’s the fact that no show here is able to end before 1:30 am, and most people don’t want to go to a warehouse that late (since, you know, bars will be closed). Does anyone know what time shows end at House of Blues? Can someone please put together an afterparty for the Andrew Bird date? KTHNX.
FRIDAY
Wild Moccasins CD Release Show with Buxton, Teenage Kicks, DJs ADR and BDM
You can get our full-sentence show and tell about this event from a post earlier this week, but essentially you’re going to get 1) a copy of the cd with your cover, 2) a Homopolice CDr cover of a Wild Moccasins song if you are one of the first 25 to ask for one, 3) a screened poster for the show if you are one of the first 50 in the door, 4)a hand-screened t-shirt with a design only available at this show, if you bring your own t-shirt, 5)Free pizza, 6)Free cupcakes, 7)three super good bands, 8 ) two NEXT LEVEL djs, who have the ability to decide if they want to play ‘Cool it Now’ as a radio single or an extended mix. Party. All Ages.
Grupo Fantasma, Vallejo, Yoko Mono @ Warehouse Live
Sometimes we feel really bad for Yoko Ono. I mean, one minute you’re just some avant garde artist who meets a guy named John, and the next thing you know a bunch of goofball Canadians are writing a song about you and then the bass player from Chango Jackson has done a little twistaroo with it and is now opening up for someone nominated for a Grammy (Grupo Fantasma) or an alt-rock outfit that ~swooon~ all the AEPhi girls liked in college. I mean, you think Yoko herself is hanging out backstage with any Grammy nominees tonight? We’re gonna go ahead and say the the little word written on the ceiling once you climb the ladder and view through the magnifying glass is ‘no.’

Leave Your Genre at the Door 2: Grandfather Child, Fat Tony, Satin Hooks, Heptic Skeptic, Nosaprise, Perseph-One and News on the March @ Fitzgeralds
YUS! We always love it when there are shows we like at Fitz. We love that place. Sue us. This second installment of Leave Your Genre at The Door features a hunk a hunk a burning indie rock and rap, including many of our favorites. As a heads up Grandfather Child, a project featuring Lucas G (Satin Hooks) and Ryan Chavez (Panic in Detroit) is playing, not Sad Gorilla (Lucas solo) as has been seen promoted in most places. BONUS: LSPS (the band formerly known as Lone Star Porn Star) is headlining the show upstairs, and that should be fun.
Saturday is also an evening of many many ‘events’, including Downtown Pavilion for the HYPA Fire + Ice Gala featuring Glasnost, Houston Music Revival, featuring Memphis May Fire, Runner Runner, Before…There Was Rosalyn, Driver F, Scarlett O’Hara, A Kid Named Thompson, Visceral, Otenki, Novista, Skyscrapers Walk Among Us, Love She Wrote, Bonnie Blue and Set It Off @ The Meridian and Houston Press Artopia, featuring Sideshow Tramps, Karina Nistal, Arthur Yoria, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, Travesty Dance Group, & more @ Winter Street Studios

NEXT LEVEL: HOUSTON’S MOST HATED LAUNCHES GLASNOST REMIX CONTEST
Jan 16th

Glasnost chills out in front of the future
Oh man. Oh. man. Are you a regular reader of Houston’s Most Hated yet? There’s a little bit of overlap between what we do and what they do, but they’re more in the know on the party scene, especially when the party is DANCE DANCE WATCH MY FEET. And they do good stuff. But we have to say, they have taken things next level by pairing up with local synth lords Glasnost for a remix contest. That’s right, HMH has the stems for three tracks by the band at their website, along with a pep talk and rules for the contest. Deadline for submission is February 12th, after which HMH readers and a panel of judges pick the best track. Grand prize is a DJ spot debuting the track at the HMH SXSW party, not to mention the fact that the remix will appear on Glasnost’s upcoming The Great Divide EP.
So, all you producers, choppers, noizers, remixers and general owners of recording equipment: congratz, you’ve got a new project with a deadline (deadlines rule). We think our in-house superstar DJ Under Warranty might take a crack at it. We’ll let you know.
ATTN THIS WEEKEND: PLEASE CURE OUR WRITERS BLOCK
Aug 15th
FAAHQ. We can’t seem to write anything today. FAAHQ. So, rather than try to lure you in with some sort of metanarrative that we connect to the events of this weekend in a way that makes you think we have too much time on our hands, we’re going to surrender to log-jam in the creative part of our minds and just be all typy type about it. BRONCO!
FRIDAY
Todd the Fox EP Release House Party
We first caught wind of Tod the Fox when they were participating in one of those Gorilla Productions battle of the bands a few months back (see – they get you media coverage after all). Since then, we’ve been playing their song “Asteroid B-16” for just about everyone that would listen, including the collective audiences for KTRU, the Sharks and Sailors CD release show, and everyone still sticking around at the end of the Old Farts Early Show. Oh yeah, them and every unfortunate visitor to The VIP Skyline Network Beergarden BBQ Ranch, where the only three other CDs available are by Roy Orbison, Girl Talk and POWERHOUSE!
And tonight is their EP release show. Way out in Katy. It’s a house party pot-luck, no less. Get the details on their MySpace. Starts at six, over at ten with three other bands that we haven’t had the luxury to check out yet, but we can tell you that it includes at least two of the following three: Amanda Tankersley, Gabe Montoya, The Radiant Mind. Note: Standard ANGRY DAD house party pre-lecture invoked – be respectful of people’s homes, don’t steal or mess with their shit and generally carry yourself like you’re not a fucking idiot.
Avant Disco@ Avant Garden
This monthly headbopper by Reprogram Music (and friends!) features music just slightly off most of our collective radar, but likely to pop up on it in the future. Featuring a blend upbeat sounds, from italo disco to leather jacketed rock n roll, and this month a second listening option on the upstairs stage (let’s take a minute to remind our readers that, if you haven’t been to Avant Garden since it was redone after Helios, you’re missing out – it’s quite spectacular now and out of the Avis camp). Upstairs sounds are curated by Esthetic Noise records, and includes performances by Studemont Project, San Antonio DJ crew Radscarsssss and lady rapper Uzoy. Downstairs the beats will be serviced by the Skull Gang Disco, which features Ceeplus Bad Knives, PRKL8R, Juan the Terrible and special guest Michael from Danseparc. PS – Free Patron Coffee shots from 10-12. Yuss.
Warehouse Party with Riff Tiffs, The Eastern Sea, Wild Moccasins @ 2220 Commerce
Get’s kicked off at 9pm and, as we pointed out yesterday, is the last chance you’ll have to catch the Riff Tiffs over the summer. Free show, BYOB. Into it.
ALSO
CEX, Stove Blow, Best Fwends @ The Mink
Nate Singleton & His Sideshow Tragedy, The Literary Greats @ Rudyard’s
SATURDAY
Left Alone @ Art Storm Gallery
If we get another fucking reminder from Facebook that we have been invited to this event, we are going to lose our freaking minds. Does anyone know how to turn this shit off? Free SKYLINE T-SHIRT to the first person who makes a Facebook app that auto-replies to ‘event invitations’ with thousands of requests that the sender join the JEEP BRAH SOCIETY BRAH. Actually, this event has some Rachel Hewlett works in it which we’re sure are good cause she’s wicked hot for real. DETAILS.
Arthur Yoria, Pale, Glasnost @ Rudyards
While Yoria continues to drop a new preview track from his forthcoming every week or so, the folks in Pale recently put out a new video for their song Glowing Black. We think we remember catching the premiere at Etro, but we can’t be certain of anything anymore given that we’ve remembered how hot Rachel Hewlett is. Can you tell we’re riding the horse down the writer’s block trail today? Good. Glasnost opens, their first show in a while.
