FREE PRESS REVEALS FALL BLOCKPARTY LINEUP

OOOOOOOOOH FIZZLE BIZZLE. You know, in the midst of a truly LOL Vice Presidential vetting disaster, it’s harder than Gary Hart to compete for your attention – and we recognize this. But fortunately, some news that will in no way raise to the DailyKos or Redstate radar has come across our desks and it’s with massive relief that we’re able to quit hitting refresh on Huffington and be able to put some actual NEWS YOU CAN USE into your hands. Granted, this won’t make your choice on November 4th any easier, but it will leave you better equipped to pull the lever on your plans for October 11th.
Yessiree, the folks at the Free Press have announced the tentative lineup for their Fall Westheimer Block Party, and as in the past it does not disappoint. Rather than list out the parade of hitmakers, let’s take a moment to contemplate this poster (the less whip ass but more informative of the two crowding out post-vacation hurricane emails in our inbox):
SHAKA! As always, the show will be free except for the final ‘main event’ at Numbers late in the evening, which, at present, appears to be headlined by Austin’s Voxtrot. Party. One day we should send Innoculist up there to headline Jester Jam Fest. Joax. More details, including individual stage lineups and set times (along with additions and subtractions of acts) are likely to head our way over the next month. We’ll keep our researches doing all the due diligence and report it back here faster than you can find Wasilla.

OH TRIPLE DIP! Turns out that our friend and yours, Andrew Lee of the Wild Moccasins, is live blogging the fest as well, though from the relative DL of his blackberry. Get his take of the action on the Live Blog Town website for real. No one has started playing yet, but CO-PILOT has definately assumed the the position while The Gold Sounds do a bit of sound checking.
We just spoke with Broman aka JD, member of Over Sea, Under Stone, Lenny Briscoe, Guitars, The Holly Hall and the SECRET MAN behind this weekend’s event and the ongoing show series in general. He let slip the word that Lenny Briscoe is going on third and that they’ll be performing a very special cover during their set. While he wouldn’t give it away he did put the word out that it will appeal to fans of Lance Walker. CHUNGA! How about a good looking picture of the man you need to thank when you get here:
The place is starting to get some traffic, and already has more feet on the dirt than the average SSS weekend. We ran into power-chord couple Jonpril, who were munchin down on some ceiveche, and Stephen Fierce and Nikki 7 (Something Fierce) just walked in the door. Oh look, Chris and Craig Warmth (Cop Warmth) making absolutely no attempt to beat the heat. “I work on a rig in this all day,” says Craig. Hot.

UPDATED: ok. turns out there is a show in Montrose afterall. This is a weird weekend kinda, and not just cause we’re recommending shows at Fitzgeralds, Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar and Double Dave’s Pizza (to some of you it will also be weird that we’re all frosted tips about a weekend at the Shady Tavern too, but we recommend the weekly show there on an ongoing basis). What’s truly odd about this is that its the first time we can ever really not recommending a single gig in the ‘Trose. Damn. It won’t be long before we’re all holding court and flooding the bathroom at The Shiloh. Nevermind.

Hey Fitz. We remember when we used to go to you all the time. It was kind of the highlight of our young lives, recently minted drivers license in our wallet and super big gulp Dr. Pepper in the cup holder of our parents’ Olds 88. We heard a rumor that this whole Leave Your Genre at the Door thing might turn into a regular event. If it does, and you keep having APPROVED mash-up line-ups like this, we might need to get a bigger cup-holder.

TEXAS SKA FEST @ DAN ELECTRO’S GUITAR BAR
You know, ever since a few weeks ago when some friends of the Skyline went to check out the Les Than Jake show and reported back about the epic time they had, we’ve had a bit of the twin tone on the brain. So then, add to that little pique of interest our desire to go give a fresh listen to Los Skarnales, who we thought were no longer a band (we swear to blog we went to a final show of some sort a few years ago at Fitz) and yet somehow bested Fatal Flying Guilloteens, Hell City Kings, Poor Dumb Bastards and Something Fierce in the Houston Press Music Awards punk category (granted, we called it at the time, but didn’t actually think it would happen). So, while checking them out, we stumbled across a poster for this event, which features eight ska bands, including Houstonians Los Skarnales, The Failed Attempt, The Pocket and Molotov Cocktail. Yeah. A band headlining a ska festival beat out all you punks. BANKSHOT. Doors at four. Ten Bucks.

OH MAN! Sadly, we won’t be joining you to see any of these shows this weekend, due to the need for michelada and grill maintenance at the famed Skyline Network Most Extreme Spring Break Beach House. It’s just like the MTV one except no Kid Rock. Ok we’re joking, of course Kid Rock will be there. We’ll take some pictures. Sadly, while we’re eating chicken wings and trying to convince Mr. Rock that it’s really a bad idea to build his next mega-hit around a Eddie Rabbit sample, we’ll be missing a ton of good stuff! CUE THE MARK MORRISON – the Riff Tiffs are back in town. Local purveyors of Texas psychedelics, the quartet is using this show to launch a new single, their first release since last years decidedly underrated Afflictinnitus. They’ve got maybe 100 copies of it, so hit up this show to be sure you end up with one. Oxfordians who may or may not carry the flame of RL Burnside, Colour Revolt, headline.

SLC PUNK! Ok not really, but we’ve always enjoyed Sad Like Crazy, even way back when we used to accidentally refer to them as Satellite Crazy. Uh, tribe band, anyone? Glad to see them taking the time to play another reunion show. Catch it!
David Allen Coe @ Hawg Stop
Ok, we don’t even know where this place is, but no amount of obscurity can cover up our rednecks. Country DJs knows that he’s an outlaw, and they most likely won’t go see him in this dive. Note the signs saying he’s been in prison and don’t be the loudmouth in the corner.

Ok, so, the people who are organizing this show are being tight lipped about where it is (note that we realize how hillarious it is to use the word ‘organize’ with these bands). We do know it’s called “The Patterson Place” and is “appr. 50 yards south of the corner of pasadena blvd and strawberry…on strawberry” according to the Caprolites, which is more words in a row than any of the lyrics on their recent Grey Ghost release. Yes, we are making fun of you.
