DUMB QUESTIONS/SMART ANSWERS: DANN MILLER

Oct 30th

Every few weeks we break out the olde Rolodex and fish out the card of one of Houston’s finest. That unlucky chap is then served up a big loosing end of some of the dumber interview questions they will face over their entire recording career. This time around we’re talking to Dann Miller, usually of The Jonbenet, but on Friday frontman for Dannzig. Givitalisten:

We were just in Pittsburgh, where they top their sandwiches with French Fries and Cole Slaw – right on the sandwich! What is your dream sandwich?
Brains for dinner, brains for lunch, brains for breakfast, brains for brunch.

Do you like to cook, and if so, what is your favorite dish to make?
I love to cook, and my favorite dish to make is anything with YAAAAAAAms!

Which is most like a house of horrors: Fiesta, Food Town or Foodarama?
I shop exclusively at hot mom Kroger, so I don’t know about that.

Have you even been to one of those HAUNTED HOUSE thingeys? If so,which one and your review:
Quite a few at Fright Fest years and years ago. Don’t really remember. Fun fact: Jeoaf from the Monocles/Dannzig was an employee of Fright Fest, known as ‘the Blood guy’.

Do you read horror books or have a particularly favorite horror movie?
I love the Exorcist, both movie and book, but I stay away from all that…..horror business.

Which was the poorest execution of the best idea: Freedie vs Jason or Aliens vs Predator?

Never had the undoubtedly extreme pleasure of seeing either. I watch this daily though:

What are the records you’ve been jamming lately?
Besides the obvious that I must listen to for Halloween preparation, a lot of Birthday Party and Shangri-las.

Are there any local bands or happenings our beautiful readership should be taking more note of?
There are few things I know of that your fine interweb publication doesn’t already adequately cover. Gotta say everyone needs to check out Airon Paul Dugas though, my dear roommate and hetero-life-partner.<3

What do you have going on right now?
Welp, I usually play in the Jonbenét and we’re slowly recording our next full length which is sounding exquisite if I do say so myself, but I don’t give a shit about that right now cause I get to pretend to be Danzig on Friday. Oh, but Jonbenét will be playing in Austin November 8th at Red 7 and December 12th at Walter’s with Brian’s Johnson I believe.

WESTERN CIVILIZATION SAYS OH HAI FROM THE ROAD

GREETINGS from Tulsa Oklahoma, one of America’s great Oil and Gas Capitals and home to the only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed cantilevered skyscraper. No kidding, this place has a serviceable skyline of it’s own, hence our being drawn to it. And speaking of gas prices, we’re not the only ones on the road. Way back before the price of West Texas Intermediary took the plunge, the economics for touring were pretty dismal, to say the least. But, the Western Civilization wanted to come play the Halifax Pop Explosion, so they decided to make it an acoustic tour, with vocalists/guitarists Reggie and Rachel packing up a 1997 Geo Metro and winding their way up to fair Nova Scotia. That’s far. It makes going to NYC look like driving to Spring. Along the way they’ve played some shows, and they even took the time to put together a little tour diary here at the midway point. Pop some kettlecorn and have a watch.

Nice huh? Makes you wonder why anyone would leave the East Coast. Oh yeah, that’s right – there’s TEXAS over here, which is pretty whips too. The song they play at the Pop Explosion is “Tie Me Up,” which is available on their WHIPS OF ACES debut album, Letters of Resignation. The other jam, just after the Boston part, is “The Ocean’s on the Rise,” which is a new song (FINALLY) and part of the recent burst of writing that we are told should lead to a new album in the future (FINALLY). Check out their MySpace if you’re from out of town and catch them when they swing through. For all us 713/281/832ers – you can catch the final show of their romp November 10th at Boondocks.

You know, there are more websites and blogs popping up it seems like every week to cover the goings-on in town, and one of them has really hit the ground running, already setting up a monthly event over at the Caroline Collective. That website is indiehouston.org, and their event is called Final Fridays. How helpful that this month it falls on Halloween. PEEP:

Along with a musical performance by Hell-plunging chrome shippers Balaclavas Somali Pirate Spokesmen Listen Listen several bands, there will be a show by Bootown doing the “Adult Storytime Theater.” What is that? We’ll let the event’s website explain:

Bootown sends out a call for stories based on a theme -in this case Halloween or Scary Stories. They pick out the best and then hand it off to a crew of actors, writers, and friends that can cut it/chop it/embellish/read/or act it. The result of there being so many options is usually a collage of creative folk entertainment.

Party. There’s also some improv theater by a group called Scatter and St. Arnolds beer. Tasty. $5. Doors at six. Music starts at seven.

Update: Turns out, it’s not Balaclavas playing, it’s Listen Listen. It wasn’t us that got that wrong, for once. Looks like the venue is working to confirm a few other acts as well, so skip back here before Friday’s done to see who else might be playing.

Update 2 The lineup has been further amended, with many quality acts now playing:
6-6:40pm Phillip Foshee
6:40 – 7:20pm Robert Ellis
7:20-8pm Scatter
8-40pm Benjamin Wesley
9-10pm Listen Listen
10-11pm Bootown

A limited run of 200 7″s that should be ready around Thanksgiving. We’re sure they will be more info as the record comes close to coming out. party.
