LIVE UPDATES: SXSW

CNN calls them iReporters. The Chron calls the ChronCommons. Local News calls them Man on the Street reports. Here at The Skyline, their official title is "Most Extreme Party Text Us Field Reporters to The Extreme." Sure, fancy publications like The Press and The Chron can send legions or handfuls or just two highly trained journalists to report on the SXSW goings on - but none of them, sadly, have access to the Scrooge McDuckian pile of money that we do, and are therefore able to field literally dozens of well read and good looking correspondents into the field of newsworthy known as SXSW. Some of them have even sent in reports. Observe:
3/12 9:07 PM - Jana Hunter:
Not playing a [BLEEP!]ing folk show!

3/12 2:00am - Jana Hunter

media1.jpg

3/12 10:32 pm - Christopher Walker
Just saw J Mascis. Called him Tommy Iommi. I r dum.

3/13 5:13 pm - Danny Mee (The Jonx)
About to sub in on drums for a twee-prog band outside a barbershop. Opening for us is...Dizzee Rascal?! Crud.

3/14 1:16 am - Mlee Marie (Hearts of Animals)
burning cds at 1am. just saw liam finn. so great. talked to him for
a sec. yay go me. srsly his stage gimmicks are ridiculously tight.
all these loops and playing drums and guitar with loops and the girl
singer was looping her voice too and stuff. brilliant.

sxsw is waaay more exciting than i thought. exhilarating. lots and
lots of people around. though i suspect that this is also the week
when the locals channel their inner rock star and strut around like
musicians that they are not. or is that atx all the time.

dimes were good tonite. ym. the crowd was a bit sparse but everyone
in it was intensely watching and seemed to be really enjoying. the
venue sucked so bad. small as ever and the stage was like, 4 feet off
the ground. ridiculous. i felt like dr. strangelove trying to force
myself not to play air guitar during their set. especially on "the
western".

3/14 1:28 am - Mlee Marie (Hearts of Animals)
carlos (Young Mammals) met thurston moore he said. doesn't everyone meet him
at sxsw? i haven't seen anyone famous walking around yet but have seen a lot of familiar faces.
SO! Are you headed up to Austin today? Do you have a cell phone and a copy of The Skyline Network Rather Helpful Print-and-Go SXSW Guide? WELL - PUT IT TO GOOD USE and send us your own Most Extreme Party Text Us Field Report to the Extreme. The number to use is on the upper right hand corner of our guide. DO IT! We look forward to exploiting you.

PARTY OF THE FUTURE!

If you are in Austin today, we highly recommend the above party. It has a great mix of local favorites, Austin cool kids and outdoors. Need directions? Don't forget to consult our handy dandy Google Venue Map, or print our The Skyline Network Rather Handy Print-and-Go Guide. Its badassical.

Speaking of Roy Mata, turns out that (though they somehow escaped the prying eyes of our PDF), Black Congress is playing SXSW too. Yes, they are playing at 6:45 pm at 1808 Club (East 12th and Chicon). So add it to your list. No, we are not making a new PDF. Its such a hassle. Party.

HOMEFRONT: SHOWS ON THURSDAY NIGHT

We're already getting some whips reporting in from our SXSW Text Message Field Correspondents, and we should have a summary up tomorrow once the reach a critical mass of sorts. In the meantime, there are a few shows worth checking out this evening for those of us still here. So, before we return to this mountainous tradeshow services order paperwork, here is where the rock come from:

Dizzy Pilot, Motion Turns it On, Corn Mo @ 3502 Leeland
HOUSE PARTY! Like the Crawfish Boil, this little gathering includes a Brooklyn band, Corn Mo, but it also features local swamp destroyers Dizzy Pilot and the ever instru-spiring Motion Turns it On. Five bucks gets you in the door and gulpin from the free beer promised by the promoters. Again, our standard Angry Dad warning applies about being respectful of people's homes so these sorts of things can happen again the the future.

An Albatross, The Apes, American Sharks, Kayo Dot @ G.R.A.B.
From some bulletin postings, we are surmising that there is an An Albatross DVD being filmed at present, and that if you are at this show, you'll get to see the miracle or the art of the science of the luck of just that sort of thing being put together. We're not too familiar with any of the out of towners, but American Sharks always brings the pain.

Also:
Ghost Buffalo, Git Some, Kingdom of Magic, This Year's Tiger @ The Mink
Ghost Buffalo and Git Some both feature former members of Planes Mistaken for Stars. This Year's Tiger remains eternally on our 'REMINDER: CHECK THEM OUT' list.

Question: Where are all the big little name acts this year? The Yeahsayers, Bon Ivers and Castanets of the world? Are we really so poor a destination?

TONIGHT ON THE HOMEFRONT: SHOWS YOU MAY BE INTERESTED IN

Though SXSW doesn’t begin until tomorrow, we’ve already sharpened our skates for the opening act of this year’s ice capades. AND OH WHAT A START! Today’s triple axle begins at 4pm sharp at 1601 Castle Court, where there is a crawfish boil a boilin! But first, a credibility establishing anecdote:

On a recent flight back from London, the Skyline Network Most Extreme Party Call Me Private Jet crashed into Newark. As our team of technicians took the Chinatown Bus down to DC to pilfer parts from the John Denver exhibit at the Aerospace Smithsonian, we took the train up to Brooklyn to spend some time meditating with the residents of the ever sage Brodome. Claire, it turns out, was also in town, having biked there accidentally from her residence on Castle Court. Short story made long, our cultural guide, Tony Balls, took us to a park where we met a young man named Fletcher, who, it turns out, is in a number of bands, as is generally the case for people you meet in Williamsburg.

Fast-forward to the present, and lo and behold that very nice young man is bringing his very nice and Creedencey young band (presumable in a very nice large van) to Claire’s digs on Castlecourt. Yep, in addition to “mud bugs” and “tubed meat”, you’ll be treated to a performance by The Weight, who we’ve been told is very good. Read all about it here. NOTE: This is a house party, which is an invitation to someone’s home. Be respectful, bring some scratch for the bands and play the fool only if you come equipped with medical insurance.

THEN LATER, The Skyline Network will be hitting up a warehouse show by Joe Matranga. You remember the band Far, right? Tin Can With Strings to You? Water and Solutions? We’re not trying to convince you, we’re just telling you where we’ll be. The warehouse is over on Mangum, and the show is around eight. Get all the details here. Update: Check out the much more detailed write-up of the show on the Space City Rock Blog.

ALSO TONIGHT:
Parts & Labor, Ecstatic Sunshine, Blades, Red Rocket @ The Mink
The Cribs, Ra Ra Riot, jeffrey Lewis, The Factory Party @ The Engine Room
The Death Set, Ponytail, Air Waves, These are Powers @ Boondocks
Von Iva, Pashva, Wicked Poseur, Lennie Briscoe @ Rudyard’s

UPDATE: Turns out that Peelander-Z is in town, and will once again be bringing their hardcore anime-goofieness to the stage at Fitzgeralds. STEAK!

OH MAI! ITS OUR SXSW PREVIEW!

HORRAY! SXSW 2008 is here. The Judy's are reuniting for a single show! We won't even bother telling you where it is or when because, let's face it, shows like that aren't for us - they're for people in the industry. Actually, most of SXSW isn't for us, which is why we're not going. Ok, actually the real reason we're not going is due to a tactical error of Spitzerian proportions in that we accepted a paying gig to write a review of show we thought was on Tuesday night but, it turns out, is actually on Saturday. See what happens when you sell out? Lesson learned. So, while we're checking out the hottest unsigned singer-songwriters ever to rock the stages of Rockville, Maryland, know that we'll be thinking of all of you who are going.

BUT WE SHALL NOT SEND YOU INTO THE DARK ALONE! NO! Far from it. By now, you've no doubt printed out sheet after handy sheet of guides to the free day parties and paid evening shows you wish to attend. But have you yet complied a list of when you can see some of the city's finest? OH WAIT, THAT'S OUR JOB! Therefore, we are pleased to present to you the handy-dandy Skyline Network Rather Helpful SXSW Print and Go Guide, in decidedly modern PDF format! ACT NOW, CAUSE THERE'S A MAP! And who doesn't love maps? If you raised your hand, the cartographers shall be upon you in short order! And because of their pummeling blows, you won't be able to bask in the glory of this google map showing the venues in question we created using internets.

ALSO - If you are attending and so inclined, we would love it to peaches if you wouldn't mind sending the occasional text or pix message update our way. Emails are great too. Readers from last year will recall that we will print nearly every field dispatch, regardless of how far from the truth. Har Mar Jandek Star sightings?! Rusted Shut bail postings?! Balcony Collapse?! Nothing is too close or too far from the truth for our rumor bin. Have fun in Austin, take care of each other and watch out for snakes.

JANDEK BLOWS UP!

If SXSW is about anything, it is about getting the word out about acts that are still under the proverbial radar (well, for the bands – for the rest of us it is about the proverbial wicked free day parties). Exactly how low that radar goes, of course, depends on what level of Chuck Taylor and beard density one is looking for in their fan-base – so it therefore might come as some surprise (or perhaps not, but we were surprised) to find that the Houston’s SXSW media winner was none other than the Whole Foods-shopping man of mystery himself, Jandek (congrats to Bun-B, who was a close second, but as a consolation prize will sell millions more records).

In addition to mentions in the Chronicle and the Austin American Statesman, our friend on Corwood picked up mentions in old media outlets across the country, including Style Weekly(!) , Canada's National Post and the old grey lady herself, the New York Times. And let us not even begin to talk about the eZines and the blogosphere. Ok, just kidding, let’s begin to talk about that.

Posts that contain Jandek per day for the last 30 days.
Technorati Chart

The chart above shows the number of posts that Technorati has found on blogs where Jandek is discussed (a big thanks to Jandek for being named Jandek and not something completely un-googleable like Joe Smith). Go here for a list of blogs. And of course you know that the kids over at Pitchfork got some coverage (they also have the best pictures of his set). Add on to that the several Chron.com blogs about waiting for and going to the show, and it’s clear that, in terms of publicity, our local recluse was the one with the big spotlight. Congratz to Jandek. Alanis Morissette is writing a song about it as we speak.

EXCLUSIVE - FATAL FLYING GUILLOTEENS: WE <3 EXTREME SPORTZ

No, they may not be a new RAPMETAL version of your favorite Huey Lewis and the News record, but at SXSW the Fatal Flying Guilloteens were interviewed by none other than the extreme-sports cable television channel Fuel TV. Taking a moment out from covering snowmobile racing and people doing untoward things with motorcycles, Spike TV's younger, angrier brother took note of one of the G_TEENS many sxsw sets and pulled in their cameras for a close up and a few questions.

<FW>
Though we don't know when the segment will air, we were given the razor thin on the final moments of the interview, when the Frenchkiss boys were asked to say "We're the Fatal Flying Guilloteens and you're watching Fuel TV." According to our source, after a bit of prodding, the coup de gras went down as follows: Guitarist/Drummer and Skyline contributor John Adams stared into space while Vox/Guitardo Shawn Adolph talked on the phone and other guitarrior/singer Brian McManus applied ample amounts of Fuel branded chap-stick, all the while mustachioed bassoonist Roy Mata spoke into the microphone as voxy/drummery Mike Bonilla whispered into his ear what to say.

It was pointed out to us that the above Fuel TV button looks very much like an ACES illustration of said bassist. In other SXSW/Guilloteen related news, we were informed that they were, infact, at the Vice Party when the structure of the building at which the party was being held gave way. According to our source, again, no one was hurt, but it did pretty much end the show and will lead to a pretty bummerific Monday meeting for the local Elks Lodge. BRUTAL.

THE UNBEARABLE LIKENESS OF BEING FIRST

We have just received word from Skyline Network correspondent and beard-on-the-street Will Adams that the Satin Hooks just played their set at the Chron.com's On The Verge SXSW stage to an audience of exactly one: Skyline Network correspondent and beard-on-the-street Will Adams. Sadly, them's the breaks at day parties sometimes - they face such stiff competition from each other that the larger ones (and even the lines to get in them) can completely decimate attendence at smaller, further away and Un-Chunklet or Pitchforky ones - especially for the bands in the early slot.

FEAR NOT YOUNG HOOKS - THE WEEK IS YOUNG.

(PS - Did anyone else even know that there was a chron.com stage? We certainly can't find it anywhere online. For the curious, it is alleged to take place at 12 5th and Trinity).

UPDATE: From the comments, Sarah @ HandStamp has posted the lineup, along with the deets on the Chron's involvement in the stage (a last minute sponsor, not an organizer). Go thee there now and get thee infoknowledged.

SXSW ALL ACCESS EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE MANIA

We bet yesterday you thought "dang, it's like the whole TSN staff just up and went to Austin and didn't leave a goodbye note or talk about how their more-platinum-than-a-Slim-Thug-record all access press pass was gonna lead to ACES insider coverage of things like Jandek doing keg-stands in his dressing room." WELL, sorry 'bout our day job yesterday.

BUT - FEAR NOT. You, our readers, knew we were going to bring back more guns than Matty and Mossy with our completely unique perspective on the festival's goings-on; the whose, the hats and the wares. AND you were right - for the next few days, until at least Saturday, we'll be live-blogging the festival from the totally un-covered perspective of Houston. Not Houston as in the scene or the bands or the whatever man, like physically, we will be here in Houston until Saturday.

BUT - we know that you may want a more in-yr-face experience than the focal point of our so long a lense on the happenings could provide, so, in the meantime, we suggest you check out (former Houstonian and current Fatal Flying Guilloteen) Bryan McManus' blog about the Ausfest for the Philadelphia Weekly or coverage on chron.com (It's not clear if The Press is going to be using that pesky blogging technology that the kids seem to like from Austin, but we can rest assured that they apparently have SXSE coverage on LOCKDOWN).

PS: Don't forget to consult our list of who has pointed their vans east and helpful show infographic of what shows to check out if you're still in town. HACKEY!

STEREOTYPE SHOW SELECTOGRAPHIC

So. As much as we like Dick Vital, we think the Morton's Salt girl is a more adorable mascot, therefore, rather than MARCH MADNESS, we have decided to turn into a kitten and name these next few weeks WHEN IT ARE RAIN IT ARE POUR. It being that time of year, there are about one million shows in the next few days, and we can't possibly list all of them, let alone attend them (however, there are some good lists at Space City Rock, Houstonist and Done Waiting). So, our crack research team has created the following helpful chart, which seemed like a much more clever idea before we realized how poorly it would look even after hours of effort. We hope it helps.

REVEALED: 713 @ SXSW

Having put the poo poo on day party schedulers and festival attendees for long enough, the mighty and predicatble SXSW official band list has finally been revealed. Though not un-deserving, the list of Houston rock kids getting wrist bands of their own is to be expected (with a few notables snubbed again). Take solace in the fact that you are already digging on the best in the city, and that there isn't some whip-ass scene in Jersey Village that you have been missing out on. Possible exception is Pekaboo Theory, whose electro-chill-whatchamacallits might be an new unknown up your alley. THE LIST:

Ceeplus and the House of Bad Knives, Fatal Flying Guilloteens, Jana Hunter, Jandek, Indian Jewelry, The Jonbenet and Rusted Shut.

ALSO, while we here at The Skyline Network don't know thing one about the rap game in our city, far more of them will be at SouthBy than their guitar toting area-code sharers. Let the assasinations begin:

Billy Cook, Chingo Bling, Devin the Dude, DJ Chill, Young Samm, Short Texas, Kenika, Lil Boom, 2 Deep, DJ Domo, 14K, Rob G, Magno, Big Tike, Lester Roy, Lil Mario, Big Pic, Lower Life Form, Southern Intellect and the Studemont Project.
