MERGE MUSIC FESTIVAL ROLLS BACK THE STONE ON YOUR EASTER WEEKEND
We hadn’t noticed this before now, but it looks like The Free Press, The Houston Press, Freebird Burritos (yuss) are teaming up to sponsor an all day festival April 11th at the Meridian. Kicking off at noon, the event promises 24 bands and 10 DJs (in the VIP room, no less). Here’s what the promoters have to say:
This Festival is inspired by the musicians for the musicians. The economy is shitty but the music is great. Venues are trying to cater to the musicians burning desire to play music. Its what they love to do! So Austin and IndieHouston.org are teaming up together to showcase some of the great and up and coming Indie acts as well as some big ones that paved the way.
True to their claim, the list of bands includes both those of the Keep Austin Weird and Houston: It’s Worth It variety. Lineup at press time: What Made Milwaukee Famous (Weird), The Watermarks (Worth It), Paris Falls (Worth It), The Boxing Lesson (Weird), Bright Light Social Hour (Weird), Your Kisses Cause Crashes (Weird), News On The March (Worth It), The Pons (Weird), The Western Civilization (Worth It), Buxton (Worth It), Oh No, Oh My (Weird), Guitars (Worth It), Spain Colored Orange (Worth It), The Seas (Weird), Half-Heavy (Weird) and Sally Crewe and the Sudden Moves (Weird)
Tickets for the event ($17.50) go on sale Wednesday January 21, at http://mergemusicfest.indietickets.com.

I think $20.75 ($3.25 service charge on a $17.50 ticket) is just outside the realm of affordability for a show like this, especially just 2 weeks after we will see many of the best bands in Houston for free at the Westheimer Block Party, and one month after I will likely see several of the Austin bands at SXSW. I love festivals and try to go to every one I can, and I probably will still pony up the cash and go to this one, but I do wish the price weren’t so high. At least I hope all the acts get paid well here. When I heard about the fest, I wanted my band to play but missed the boat on it. Then when I realized the cost I thought $20 might be a tough sell for our fans anyway. All that said, I’m really excited to see more festivals in Houston and a couple of the Austin bands are friends of mine, so that will be cool.

Jason,
We figured a lot of people would have this reaction b/c its sort of the first of its kind in Houston. The block party is awesome, but it’s a whole other event.
Man do I love it though, I usually end up having the best day of my life and drunk as fart. I like drunk as fart. 2005 I think it was, somehow ended up drunken at Catbirds and passed out in the bano where I was then escorted out to which I found Sliders where I did the same thing.
But anway, MERGE is 35 acts @ $17.50+ all day event equals 50 cents per act a patron pays for. Its almost free. I have to generate some dough to pay for the venue, plus sound guys, plus lighting guys, plus sweet drink deals everyone will get all day.
I really hope the city gets behind MERGE, most of these type of fests around Texas cost $40 plus. Take in consideration Fun Fun Fun Fest or Wall of Sound in Dallas a few years ago.
We want to give all 35 acts the Concert Experience in a big Venue in front of fun diverse audience.
I am sorry your band didn’t make it time. Myspace us at myspace.com/mergemusicfest and I can get you in on a Day Party here during SXSW.
We are bringing nationwide talent scouts/record label types/and many more to mix in the audience and then mingle with the bands hoping that your friends bands in Houston might have a chance to get exposure and notability in the industry.
MERGE is about someone giving a shit about music, and possible going bankrupt tyring to do it?
It’s luv baby! Maybe crazy luv, but luv nun the less.
My band is playing Rudz 2/7/2009 with Guitars, The Westen Civilization, and The Pons, feel fee to stop by and talk, we’ll be downstairs partying our balls off, b/c I love that place, been a minute.
