BREAKING NEWS: LOMAX BACK IN THE EDITOR'S CHAIR!

We've been big fans of The Press' new music editor, Chris Gray. We even had a few beers with him at the Big Top one night: and he's a solid guy whose local coverage we were looking forward to reading for years to come. So we were a little hit in the chest when we read this bulletin from him just moments ago:
Guess what? About an hour after I had finally finished all my SXSW writing, I found out that the Houston Press parent company has eliminated my friend and colleague John Nova Lomax's Executive Music Editor position, sending him back to Music Editor at the Press, sending me back to... well, I don't really know that yet, and no one else seems to either.

This is still sinking in, and will continue to do so for several days I'm sure. But if ANY of you out there has any ideas how a writer/editor specializing in music might be able to put food on the table, now would be the time to speak up. Thanks.
Damn that sucks. He just moved here too. We wish him all our best. We'll keep you updated.

I was wondering how I'd come down off my SXSW high. That pretty much did it. Wow that is the freaking lamest shit I'd heard in a long time.

That does blow. He's done a lot of good stuff for the Press (and local music) lately.

Of course, they've had assistant music editor positions before.

Chris is for sure some of the best writing that staff has had in some time.
If he is willing to accept payment in lamb shanks from Alladin, he can write for us any day....not a joke...

Amen Omar,

If Chris needed to slum with us temporarily I'd be more that happy to let him take over my column, he is as you say a "clutch" writer. Best thing to have happened to Houston Music's music Journalism since ADR started up Skyline.

Maybe if he'd had a bit more open disdain for Houston music he would've lasted longer there.

I think you are onto something there Joe. Clearly Chris broke all the rules: he liked and championed the music, he was never snakry or disdainful, he never bitched about all those scenster kids gettign off his lawn, and (worst of all) he actually went out to shows regularly. Clearly, he needed to go!

Such a shame... And I hear his next feature article was going to be the liner notes to the Klaxons album with the British spellings edited ("favour" becomes "favor," etc.). He was just starting to get with the program!

(To clarify, my previous "would've lasted longer there" applies to his position, not the paper itself. As far as I can tell, the majority of people who write there are not douche balloons)

Thanks, Joe.

I can assure you, all of us are bummed about this.

Holy crap. I've got a lot of respect for Lomax, actually, but dammit, I really enjoyed Chris's writing, and he seemed like a real nice guy.

Damn. I'd heard the stories, but this makes me think New Times/Village Voice really has its head firmly implanted in its collective ass...

And hey, I know we're hardly a paying gig -- barring the free CDs/etc. -- but Chris, if you ever read this and feel underutilized & whatnot, SCR would love to have you.

You might also talk to David Cobb over at Houston Calling; I know he knows some folks at other (uh, paying) magazines in town...

FUCK FUCK FUCK!

Chris is great, and about the only person at the press willing to give The Black Math Experiment coverage. FUCK FUCK FUCK.
